    Reperti lapidei di et\ue0 romana rinvenuti a Fornovo Taro: provenienza e circolazione

    Nelle collezioni del Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Parma tra i reperti litici di et\ue0 romana figurano anche tre oggetti recuperati a Fornovo Taro o nelle sue adiacenze diversi per contesto di ritrovamento e destinazione d\u2019uso, di cui si \ue8 analizzata la pietra ai fini di determinarne la provenienza e le possibili rotte commerciali. In particolare sono stati presi in esame:- una epigrafe frammentaria (n.inv. L 49), databile al II secolo d.C., gi\ue0 murata in uno dei pilastri della Pieve ed entrata a far parte delle collezioni museali nel 18671; - una piccola scultura raffigurante Afrodite accovacciata secondo il modello dello scultore ellenistico Doidalsas (n.inv. MANPr 31963), recuperata negli anni Ottanta del secolo scorso al margine occidentale di Piazza IV Novembre, databile ai primi decenni sempre del II secolo d.C.2; - una base di colonna (mancante di n.inv. e abbreviata con la sigla BCG), recuperata nel 1980 a Roncolungo di Sivizzano tra i materiali accatastati ai margini della strada statale dal proprietario del terreno in attesa di disfarsene

    Evaluation of the antioxidant/antimicrobial performance of Posidonia oceanica in comparison with three commercial natural extracts and as a treatment on fresh-cut peaches (Prunus persica Batsch)

    This research aimed at extending the choice of natural antimicrobials/antioxidants for food applications. Four plant extracts, Posidonia oceanica (PO), Green Tea (GT), Grape seeds (GS) and Grape skin (GK), were analyzed to determine their total phenolic content, antioxidant activity and in vitro antimicrobial performance. PO extract showed the highest total phenolic content (711 mg gallic acid/g extract) and antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger and Penicillium chrysogenum. The highest antioxidant (3.81 mg/L EC50) and antibacterial activities (bactericidal against Gram positives and bacteriostatic against Gram negatives) were found for GT extract. The best performing extracts (PO and GT) were applied by dipping on peach slices in storage trials. Microbiological and pomological parameters were evaluated during 7 d storage. Total aerobic count, Pseudomonas as well as yeasts and moulds populations, were reduced by about 0.5 log cfu/g, mainly up to 5 d in all treated samples compared to the control. Total soluble solids, titratable acidity and colour (L*a*b*) changes were also delayed in treated fruit

    Feeding ecology of the transparent goby <em>Aphia minuta</em> (Pisces, Gobiidae) in the northwestern Adriatic Sea

    The feeding ecology of the transparent goby Aphia minuta was examined in spring (May 2003) in the coastal waters off Comacchio, in the northwestern Adriatic Sea. Stomach content analysis indicated A. minuta to be a planktivorous species, feeding exclusively on pelagic invertebrates. The diet composition was dominated by the calanoid copepods Acartia clausi and Temora longicornis, followed in decreasing order of importance by other copepods (especially calanoids and Oncaea spp.) and larvae of decapods, polychaetes and bivalves. A. minuta exhibited a generalistic feeding strategy with a relatively broad niche width. Abundant taxa in the environment, such as A. clausi and T. longicornis, were seldom selected, whereas rare taxa, such as larvae of polychaetes and decapods, were highly selected. According to the observed ontogenetic shift in diet, small-size individuals relied preferentially on juvenile T. longicornis and Oncaea spp., whereas large-sized specimens consumed preferably A. clausi and calanoids. The positive relationship found between prey and fish size may help to mitigate the intraspecific competition for food resources

    Context: Vitamin D deficiency has been proven to affect fertility in mammals, but data in human is less convincing. In particular, data on in vitro fertilization (IVF), an attractive model to draw information on this topic, are sparse and conflicting.Objective: Our objective was to investigate IVF outcome in women with deficient 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25 (OH)D] serum levels (30 ng/mL) had the highest chances of pregnancy.Conclusions: VitaminDis an emerging factor influencing female fertility and IVF outcome. Additional studies are pressingly needed to confirm a causal relationship and to investigate the potential therapeutic benefits of vitamin D supplementation

    pT3 N0 Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Oncologic Outcomes and Prognostic Factors of Surgically Treated Patients

    Objectives/Hypothesis: To assess the disease control, survival rates, and prognostic factors of exclusive surgical treatment for patients with pT3 N0 laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). Study Design: Multicentric retrospective cohort study. Methods: Multicentric retrospective case series of previously untreated patients with pT3 R0N0 LSCC, who received exclusive surgery between 2011 and 2019. Tumor location; subsite involvement; grading; and lymphatic, vascular, and perineural invasion were reported. Overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), and disease-free survival (DFS) were measured. Results: Fifty-four patients (mean age 67.1; male sex 83.3%; mean follow-up period 37 months) underwent total laryngectomy (48.1%) or partial laryngectomy (51.9%). Ipsilateral or bilateral neck dissection was performed in 46 (85.2%) cases. Perineural invasion was more frequent in case of supraglottic involvement than glottic involvement (85.7% vs. 14.3%, P&nbsp;=.03). Five (9.3%) patients experienced recurrence (3 local recurrences, 1 nodal recurrence, 1 distant recurrence). Rate of recurrence differed between glottic (0%), supraglottic (80%), and transglottic (20%) tumors (P&nbsp;=.01), with a lower risk yielded by glottic involvement (odds ratio [OR], 0.05, 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 0.01–0.56, P&nbsp;=.01). A higher risk was recorded in case of perineural invasion (OR, 66.0, 95% CI, 1.41–3085.3, P&nbsp;=.03). The OS, DSS, and DFS were 79.6%, 96.3%, and 90.7%, without differences regarding the type of surgery. The DFS was lower in case of supraglottic involvement when compared to purely glottic LSCC (83.9% vs. 100%, P&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.02). Conclusions: Exclusive surgery is a safe option for patients with pT3 R0N0 LSCC. Adjuvant treatments or closer follow-up monitoring might be considered in case of supraglottic involvement or perineural invasion. Level of Evidence: 4 Laryngoscope, 131:2262–2268, 2021

    Different Seasonal Collections of Ficus carica L. Leaves Diversely Modulate Lipid Metabolism and Adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 Adipocytes

    Due to the high prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes, adipogenesis dysfunction and metabolic disorders are common features in the elderly population. Thus, the identification of novel compounds with anti-adipogenic and lipolytic effects is highly desirable to reduce diabetes complications. Plants represent an important source of bioactive compounds. To date, the antidiabetic potential of several traditional plants has been reported, among which Ficus carica L. is one of the most promising. Considering that plant metabolome changes in response to a number of factors including seasonality, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether Ficus carica leaves extracts collected in autumn (FCa) and spring (FCs) differently modulate lipid metabolism and adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The H-1-NMR profile of the extracts showed that FCs have a higher content of caffeic acid derivatives, glucose, and sucrose than FCa. In contrast, FCa showed a higher concentration of malic acid and furanocoumarins, identified as psoralen and bergapten. In vitro testing showed that only FCa treatments were able to significantly decrease the lipid content (Ctrl vs. FCa 25 mu g/mL, 50 mu g/mL and 80 mu g/mL; p &lt; 0.05, p &lt; 0.01 and p &lt; 0.001, respectively). Furthermore, FCa treatments were able to downregulate the transcriptional pathway of adipogenesis and insulin sensitivity in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. In more detail, FCa 80 mu g/mL significantly decreased the gene expression of PPAR gamma (p &lt; 0.05), C/EBP alpha (p &lt; 0.05), Leptin (p &lt; 0.0001), adiponectin (p &lt; 0.05) and GLUT4 (p &lt; 0.01). In conclusion, this study further supports an in-depth investigation of F. carica leaves extracts as a promising source of active compounds useful for targeting obesity and diabetes

    INTEGRATED DATING OF THE CONSTRUCTION AND RESTORATION OF THE MODENA CATHEDRAL VAULTS (NORTHERN ITALY): PRELIMINARY RESULTS

    After the last damaging earthquake in 2012, an anti-seismic reinforcement project of the cathedral of Modena was designed giving us the opportunity to investigate and date the building materials. Radiocarbon (14C), optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), and thermoluminescence (TL) dating techniques were performed on the vaults with the aim to (1) clarify the construction timing, (2) define the history of the restorations, and (3) explore the possible correlation of the main restoration works to the earthquake chronology deduced from the historic catalog. Preliminary results show that medieval older bricks were reused for most of the original construction. Only lime and non-gypsum mortar was used for the original construction in the 15th century and for later repair of damage caused by earthquakes in the 16th and 17th centuries. Gypsum mortar was used for later repair in the 18th century. The results show much stronger damage due to earthquakes than previously thought

    Novel mutations in the WFS1 gene are associated with Wolfram syndrome and systemic inflammation

    Mutations in the WFS1 gene, encoding wolframin (WFS1), cause endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and are associated with a rare autosomal-recessive disorder known as Wolfram syndrome (WS). WS is clinically characterized by childhood-onset diabetes mellitus, optic atrophy, deafness, diabetes insipidus and neurological signs. We identified two novel WFS1 mutations in a patient with WS, namely, c.316-1G &gt; A (in intron 3) and c.757A &gt; T (in exon 7). Both mutations, located in the N-terminal region of the protein, were predicted to generate a truncated and inactive form of WFS1. We found that although the WFS1 protein was not expressed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of the proband, no constitutive ER stress activation could be detected in those cells. In contrast, WS proband's PBMCs produced very high levels of proinflammatory cytokines (i.e. TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) in the absence of any stimulus. WFS1 silencing in PBMCs from control subjects by means of small RNA interference also induced a pronounced proinflammatory cytokine profile. The same cytokines were also significantly higher in sera from the WS patient as compared to matched healthy controls. Moreover, the chronic inflammatory state was associated with a dominance of proinflammatory T helper 17 (Th17)-type cells over regulatory T (Treg) lymphocytes in the WS PBMCs. The identification of a state of systemic chronic inflammation associated with WFS1 deficiency may pave the way to innovative and personalized therapeutic interventions in WS

    Rare GBA1 genotype associated with severe bone disease in Gaucher disease type 1

    Introduction:Gaucher disease (GD) type 1 is a lysosomal disease characterised by hepatosplenomegaly, anemia,thrombocytopenia, bone changes, and bone marrow infiltration. The disease is caused by biallelic pathogenicvariants inGBA1which codes for glucocerebrosidase, an enzyme involved in the catabolic pathway of complexlipids.Aims:To report on the case of two sisters with GD type 1 who bear a genotype never reported in the literature.Case report:Patient 1 is a 47-year-old female diagnosed at 42 years of age with chronic lumbar pain, mildsplenomegaly, slightly reduced platelets and normal hemoglobin values, severe Bone Marrow Burden (BMB)score, high chitotriosidase activity, and low glucocerebrosidase. Patient 2 is a 50-year-old female, sister of pa-tient 1, who was diagnosed after familial screening. At 45 years of age, she had osteonecrosis of the left femurand a total hysterectomy because of uncontrollable bleeding. Atfirst evaluation, she had bone pain with a highBMB score, mild splenomegaly, normal hemoglobin, normal platelets count, elevated chitotriosidase activity,and low glucocerebrosidase activity. Both patients were found to be compound heterozygotes for thep.Glu388Lys and the p.Ser405Asn variants inGBA1.Conclusions:This is thefirst family with GD and this combination of variants which causes a phenotype re-markable for severe bone disease with no or mild hematological manifestations
